Cold gets the blame, but heat is what actually wears cars out — and Florida serves more of it than almost anywhere in the country. Here’s what our climate does, system by system, to the European cars we see every day.
Start with the battery — the number-one heat casualty. More car batteries die from heat than from cold; winter just takes the credit, because a battery weakened all summer finally quits on the first cool morning. The mechanism is plain chemistry: in lead acid batteries, summer heat evaporates electrolyte and accelerates corrosion of the internal grids, and neither is reversible. Underhood temperatures in Florida stop-and-go traffic run far above the already-hot ambient air — extreme heat by any battery’s standard — so your vehicle’s battery spends months being slowly cooked.
It shows first in battery life: a lifespan of roughly 2.5–4 years here versus 4–6 up north. And battery failure rarely announces itself. The signs of heat damage, when you get them at all: slow cranking on the first start of the day, a swollen battery casing (heat literally deforms it), corrosion creeping over the battery terminals, and low resting voltage on a test. There’s a knock-on effect too — as the battery fades, the alternator works harder on every drive to recharge it, so a dying battery quietly stresses the charging system that’s keeping it alive.
One Florida-specific wrinkle: most modern European cars — anything with start-stop — run AGM batteries rather than conventional flooded ones. AGM batteries handle hot weather better and don’t vent electrolyte the same way, but they cost more, and on a BMW, Mercedes, Audi or VW a new battery must be registered or coded to the car so the charging strategy matches it.
