The most common cause. A leak from a hose, the radiator, the water pump, or a gasket drops the coolant level until the system can't carry heat away. Sometimes you'll see puddles or steam; sometimes the loss is internal. Either way, the fix starts with finding where it's going.

A thermostat stuck in the closed position blocks coolant from reaching the radiator, so heat has nowhere to go and the temperature climbs fast. It's the opposite failure of a P0128 (stuck open) and far more urgent, because it causes actual overheating.

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine. When its impeller or bearing fails, flow stops and the engine overheats even with plenty of coolant. On many European engines the pump is driven by the timing system, so a failure can have knock-on effects worth catching early.

At low speed and in traffic, an electric cooling fan does the work that airflow does on the highway. If the fan, its relay, or its control fails, you'll overheat specifically when stopped or crawling — a very Florida-traffic failure — while highway driving stays cool.

What should I do the moment my car starts overheating?

Why does my car overheat in traffic but not on the highway?
That pattern points straight at the cooling fan. On the highway, airflow through the radiator keeps things cool on its own. In stop-and-go traffic there's little airflow, so the electric fan has to do the job — and if the fan, relay, or its control has failed, the temperature climbs only when you're stopped or crawling. In Florida traffic that's a common and very diagnosable failure.
Is it safe to drive a short distance while overheating?
