A few quick clues narrow it down before anything is opened up:
- Warm at idle, cold when moving → condenser airflow, cooling fans, or a low charge.
- Cold then gradually warm → low refrigerant or an icing evaporator.
- Warm on one side, cold on the other → a blend-door actuator.
- Weak airflow but still cool → a clogged cabin filter.
- A squeal or knock with the warm air → the compressor.
The single most important thing to know: the AC is a sealed system. If the refrigerant level is low, it leaked — and “just topping it up” is a patch that buys a few weeks while the compressor slowly starves. The right fix is to find the leak, repair it, and recharge to the exact factory amount.

The compressor is the heart of the air conditioning system. When its clutch, bearing, or internals fail, you get warm air instead of cool air, sometimes a squeal or a knock, and often metal debris that contaminates the whole system. Why does my car AC blow cold then warm?
Cold-then-warm is a classic sign of low refrigerant or a system that's icing up. As the refrigerant level drops, the AC can still cool briefly, then loses capacity — especially at idle or in stop-and-go traffic. It can also mean the evaporator is freezing over and then thawing. Either way it points to the refrigerant circuit and is worth diagnosing before the compressor is starved of lubrication and damaged.
Is it bad to keep driving with the AC not working?
The car is safe to drive — the AC isn't tied to how the engine or brakes work. But if the cause is a refrigerant leak, running the system low starves the compressor of the oil that travels with the refrigerant, which can destroy an expensive part. So while it won't strand you, ignoring it can turn a small repair into a large one — and in Florida summer heat, that's a long time to wait.

How often does car AC need a recharge?
A properly sealed air conditioning system should never need a routine 'recharge.' If yours is low, it has a leak — that's not normal wear. Why is my AC colder when I'm driving than when I'm stopped?
At speed, air flows naturally through the condenser at the front of the car and helps it shed heat. At idle, the system relies entirely on the cooling fans.
