  • Still there? Swap or test the fuel injector, and verify fuel pressure.
  • All clean? Compression test and smoke test — because no ignition part fixes low compression or an intake manifold leak at that runner.

Coil-on-plug failures are routine on both brands, and oil leaking from an aging valve-cover gasket into the spark plug well is a classic single-cylinder misfire cause — the plug and coil drown in oil. If cylinder 1's plug comes out oily, the gasket is part of the repair, or the misfire returns.

Audi / VW

On 2.0T engines, single-cylinder misfires are usually a coil or plug, but carbon buildup on that cylinder's intake valve and a weak injector are close behind. Cold-start-only misfires on these engines point strongly at carbon.

The last digit. P0301 names a specific cylinder — number 1 — while P0300 means misfires are random or spread across multiple cylinders. The codes run in a family from P0301 to P0312, one diagnostic trouble code per cylinder. A single-cylinder fault code is actually good diagnostic news: the problem is localized, and swapping the coil or injector to another cylinder confirms the culprit with certainty before any money is spent.

Can I drive with a P0301 code?

If the light is steady and the engine runs tolerably, drive gently and get it seen soon — a misfiring cylinder wastes fuel and stresses the engine mounts and catalyst.
