The traction control system (TCS) is either actively working, switched off, or disabled by a fault — the light's behavior tells you which.
The car drives normally, but with traction control off you lose the safety net on slippery, rain-soaked Florida roads. If the light flickers only when accelerating on slick pavement, that's the system working. If it stays on constantly, a fault has disabled it — get it checked soon.
The traction control warning light — the little car with skid marks — is one of the most misread lights on the dash, because it has three different messages depending on behavior:
- Flickers or blinks under acceleration on slippery roads → the system is working, catching wheelspin and loss of traction as it happens. Normal.
- On solid, possibly with “OFF” text → someone pressed the disable button (easy to do by accident).
- On solid with no OFF indication — often with the ABS light → a fault has disabled the traction control system (TCS — the same system BMW calls DSC, Mercedes ESP, and Audi/VW ESC/ASR).
The third case is the one that needs attention, and the usual reason the light comes on is the same as an ABS light: a wheel speed sensor or its corroded connector — Florida humidity is hard on them. The steering-angle sensor is the other frequent culprit, especially if the light appeared after an alignment or a battery change (it often just needs recalibration).

Wheel speed sensor
The traction control system reads the same wheel speed sensors as the ABS to detect a loss of traction — and a failed sensor or corroded connector is the most common reason the light stays on. One bad sensor typically lights both warnings at once.

Worth ruling out first: most cars have a button (often ESC/ESP/DSC) that disables traction control, and it's easy to press by accident. If the light shows 'OFF' text or came on right after fiddling with buttons, check the switch before anything else.

Is it safe to drive with the traction control light on?
Yes, in normal conditions — the engine and brakes work as usual. What you've lost is the system that stops wheelspin and slides before you feel them, which matters most on slippery roads. In Florida, where afternoon rain is a daily event half the year, treat a constantly-lit traction light as a soon repair: drive gently in the rain until it's fixed.
Why does the traction control light flicker when it rains?
That's the system doing its job. When a drive wheel starts to lose traction on slick pavement, traction control cuts power or brakes that wheel, and the light blinks while it intervenes. Flickering under acceleration on wet roads is normal and healthy. The problem is a light that stays on solid — that means the system has shut itself off due to a fault.
Can I reset the traction control light myself?
If it's on because the system was switched off, yes — press the ESC/ESP/DSC button, or simply restart the car, and the light goes out. A light that returns after a reset is the system telling you it found the same fault again.
