Uneven wear won't strand you today — but it's your car telling you where money is leaking. Fix the cause before buying tires, or the new set inherits the same fate. If cord or wire shows anywhere on the tread, that tire is done now.

Tires don’t wear unevenly at random — each pattern is a signed confession. The tread is the only part of the car that touches the road, so anything wrong above it gets written down there, slowly and legibly.

The five-second read of your own tires:

  • One edge worn (inner or outer) → wheel alignment — camber or toe out of spec.
  • Both edges worn, center fine → underinflation.
  • Center worn, edges fine → overinflation.
  • Cupped, scalloped patches with a hum → worn shocks or struts.
  • Front vs rear axle wearing very differently → missed rotations (or a staggered setup — see the FAQ).
  • Feathered wear that returns after every alignment → worn ball joints, tie rods or wheel bearings.

Run a hand across the tread: it should feel smooth in both directions. Feathering you can feel but barely see is the earliest warning alignment gives.

Wheel alignment is off — wear on one edge

One-sided wear — the inner or outer edge of the tire wearing faster than the rest — is the signature of alignment: camber (the tire leaning in or out) or toe (the tires pointing slightly toward or away from each other). A pothole, a curb strike, or plain time can knock either out of spec. The car may also pull to one side or hold the steering wheel off-center. A factory-spec wheel alignment fixes the cause; do it before new tires, not after.

Wrong tire pressure — center or both-edge wear

Inflation writes its own pattern: overinflated tires bulge and wear the center of the tread; underinflated tires ride on their shoulders and wear both edges evenly. It's the cheapest cause on this page and the easiest to rule out — set pressures to the door-jamb sticker, not the number on the tire's sidewall. Worn shocks or struts — cupping

Cupping — scalloped dips eaten around the tread, often with a rhythmic drone or humming noise that's easy to mistake for a bad wheel bearing — means the tire is bouncing instead of staying pressed to the road. Worn shocks, struts or springs let the wheel hop microscopically thousands of times a mile, and every landing grinds a patch. New tires on tired suspension cup again; the suspension gets fixed first.

Skipped rotations — front and rear wearing differently

Driven wheels and steering wheels wear differently by nature — that's normal, and tire rotation exists to average it out. Skip rotations long enough and one axle's tires are finished while the other's look new, which on many all-wheel-drive European cars is its own problem: AWD systems tolerate only small differences in tire circumference between axles. Rotate on schedule — with one caveat for staggered setups, covered in the FAQ.

Worn ball joints or wheel bearings

Play in ball joints, tie rod ends or wheel bearings lets the wheel wander microscopically no matter how good the alignment numbers look — producing feathered or erratic wear that keeps coming back after every alignment. If wear patterns recur despite correct alignment and pressures, worn components are the suspects, and they're found by inspection with the car on a lift, not by another alignment.

Do I need new tires or just an alignment?

Read the tread depth where the tire is NOT worn. If the healthy part of the tread still has good depth and the damage is one edge caught early, an alignment stops the bleeding and the tires can finish their life. If any part of the tread is at the wear bars — or cord shows — you need both: tires and the alignment that protects them. Buying tires without fixing the cause is a subscription, not a purchase.

What does cupping on tires mean?

Scalloped, wave-like dips around the tread — usually with a hum or drone at speed that many people mistake for a wheel bearing. Cupping means the tire is bouncing: worn shocks or struts aren't keeping it planted, so it lands and grinds, thousands of times a mile. The tires are evidence; the suspension is the culprit.

How much does a wheel alignment cost?

Typically $120–$250 depending on the car — European cars with adjustable rear geometry sit at the upper end because there's genuinely more to set. Weigh that against the alternative: a set of premium tires runs $800–$1,500+, and bad alignment can visibly eat one in ten thousand miles. The alignment is the cheap half of the equation, every time.

How often should I rotate my tires?

Every 5,000–7,500 miles for most cars — the easy habit is pairing it with every oil change. Rotation evens out the natural wear difference between axles, which matters double on all-wheel-drive cars where mismatched tire circumference stresses the AWD system itself.

My car has staggered wheels — can I still rotate?

Not front-to-back. Staggered setups — wider rear tires than front, common on BMW, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche — can't rotate on the usual pattern, so the rears (which also drive the car) wear noticeably faster. That's inherent to the setup, not a defect. What still matters: pressures, factory-spec alignment, and side-to-side rotation where the tires are non-directional. Expect to replace rears more often, and budget accordingly.

Can uneven tire wear cause vibration?

Yes — cupped or irregularly worn tires shake and hum, and flat-spotted or unevenly worn tread can feel like a wheel out of balance that balancing never quite fixes.
